Description
Wingspan: Male - 32-36mm Female - 34-40mm
Worldwide Distribution: Europe (British Isles,northern Spain,Scandinavia,Finland to the Balkans - missing from Mediterranean basin) to eastern Asia
UK Distribution: England to Yorkshire & Cumbria,Wales & mainland Scotland - widely distributed : Ireland - widespread : Channel Isles -rare
UK Conservation Status -
Flight Period: April to June & July to September - two generations : Scotland - late May to June - single generation
Habitat: Broadleaved Woodland : Scrub : Heathland : Bogs
Similar Species -
Pupa: Pupates in rolled or spun leaf on the hostplant in summer,the second brood doing the same but the leaf falling in the autumn
Overwinters as: Pupa
Observations: This moth is easily recognised with its scalloped or dentate termen and its wings raised at rest in a tent-like formation.The antemedial and postmedial cross lines are clearly highlighted in dark brown against a background of sandy brown which changes to darker brown towards the terminal band.There is a small black discal spot centrally between the median lines positioned just in from the costa.
Second generation moths tend to be smaller and lighter brown whereas first generation moths have have stronger lattice like markings and are silvery grey.
Both sexes are attracted to light and are found at the moth trap in small numbers.
